About us

We believe that every human being is endowed with inherent worth and dignity. That dignity is not to be stripped away, especially when people flee persecution. Refugee immigration is a polarising and divisive issue in the UK and we believe music can aid in building bridges of understanding and diffusing tension. We harness this potential through a musical collective which shares the real-life stories of migrants through music, poetry, and other art forms.

Founded in 2023, Odyssey Ensemble is the UK’s first professional orchestra exclusively dedicated to amplifying real-life stories of asylum-seekers and refugees through orchestral music, inspiring empathy and respect for their human dignity.

We use orchestral music as a common currency with concert-goers who might not otherwise engage with the subject of refugee migration. The orchestra acts as a vehicle for refugee stories in the concert hall, told by those with lived experience, through music, poetry, film, dance, and other art forms. Refugees feature front-and-centre in our performances and are involved in co-creating new works for programmes. Odyssey currently provides regular music and poetry workshops to unaccompanied refugee children and young people in Oxford, acting as a platform for co-creation.

In addition to regular performances in London and Oxford, our concert season will see us tour in areas with high orchestral concert attendance rates and where concern regarding inward refugee immigration may be prevalent. We hope to invest in these communities by providing training to young musicians and giving them access to world-class artists while encouraging them to engage artistically with refugees. We also aim to perform for key policymakers in Parliament and other industry stakeholders to build connections and inform UK public policy on forced migration.
